What is potassium?
Potassium is a mineral that works together with chloride and sodium to ensure a moisture balance and a steady blood pressure. In this story, potassium is the antagonist (has the opposite effect) of the sodium, which raises your blood pressure.
A deficit of this mineral by not enough intake, doesn't really happen. It can how ever happen after extreme vomiting, diarrhea or with the use of water pills. Symptoms of a shortage in your system are loss of appetite, weakened muscles, nausea, listlessness/apathy and in extreme cases sometimes cardiac arrhythmias.
The recommended amount of potassium is 3500 milligrams per adult per day.
