VITAMIN B6

What is vitamin B6?

Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, is used in processes of the metabolism, especially the breakdown and buildup of amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. This vitamin also regulates the hormones that are responsible for growth, the production of blood and the ongoing work of the immune and nervous system.

A shortage of this vitamin leads to anaemia, nervous disorders and a low functioning immune system. The chance at a shortage of this vitamin is not very large.

An overdose of vitamin B6 can lead to peripheral neuropathy. Symptoms here of are numbness and a tingling feeling or extreme nerve pain in hands and feet, all caused by disorders of the nervous system.

The recommended amount of vitamin B6 is 1,5 milligrams per day per adult.
