SODIUM

What is sodium?

Sodium is a mineral that your body needs to retain the right amount of water and therefore the moisture balance throughout the body. Your blood pressure and well functioning of your muscle- and nerve cells are influenced by your sodium intake.

It barely ever happens for someone to have a deficit of this mineral. It happens a lot though, that people consume too much of it. An overdose of this mineral can cause high blood pressure. When untreated, this creates a higher and higher chance of getting heart- and vascular diseases.

When you choose to use sodium in your cooking, choose for a salt with more different minerals, like sea, Himalayan or Celtic salt.

The recommended amount of sodium is 1000 milligrams per adult per day. The maximum about that is recommended for this mineral is 2400 milligrams.

Where do I get sodium from?
